Our Story
CARLA MINETT
CEO & FOUNDER
MINETT CONSULTING, LLC
As a Founder and Principal Consultant, Carla Minett helps companies create holistic leadership development programs that empower their engineers to transcend their technical expertise. With her experience as a Mechanical Engineer turned Emerging Leader, and her certification as an emotional intelligence practitioner, she brings a unique set of skills and insights to partner with Engineering Organizations to bridge the gap in engineering leadership development.
Carla was born in Peru and immigrated to the US in her late teens. With the same values that she upholds today, she is no stranger to turning challenges into opportunities. She achieved her post-graduate education (M.S.M.E.) and stood out as an emerging leader in one of her region’s largest manufacturing companies, in the U.S.A. She is now married to an Engineer and has 2 beautiful children, and works as a Leadership Program Consultant for Engineering Companies, in person and virtually, out of Chesapeake, VA.
Early in her career, Carla nearly left her job due to a lack of development opportunities. However, her path took a transformative turn when she encountered a series of transformational opportunities that exponentially influenced her own growth, both professionally and personally. This experience propelled her to become an Emerging Leader, Program Manager, and Program Lead, including being considered as a high-potential candidate in succession planning.
This experience opened her eyes to the common struggle engineers face when seeking career advancement and the key elements that positively impact top talent attraction and retention in Engineering Organizations.
Recognizing the vital need for nurturing, attracting, and retaining future engineering leaders, Carla founded Minett Consulting and Engineers to LeadersTM. With her strategic approach to leadership programs, she leverages the Engineers to Leaders model to craft a company-tailored roadmap, precisely designed to guide your organization towards maximizing its potential and setting in motion a powerful flywheel of leadership development.
Lessons from her journey from engineer to leader, that shaped her career
“Get your hard hat dirty”, often
The people working on the front line know what could be done better but their voice often doesn’t make it to the ears of decision makers. As Engineers and future leaders, we must leave the comfort of our clean desk and offsite facility, and talk and try to understand what goes on in the front line.
Real leaders develop other leaders
They’re always inspiring and mentoring others to be successful. They understand that building others is key to the company’s sustainable success.
Communications’ cadence must be intentional and protected.
Show your people that they matter by committing to a time on your calendar to touch base with them, regularly. This is specially important to keep up in busier times. Even your high achievers may become disengaged (and potentially look for a job elsewhere) if lack of staying in your radar lead them to feel like their role and work contribution aren’t important enough to make the time to stay in touch about it.
Trust is easier to maintain than to repair.
If you tell people you are going to do something with the information they gave you, always follow up, even if it is to communicate a negative outcome. Otherwise, trust is broken and people will get discouraged to share with you important information, again.
Why choose to partner with us
We are engineers who have walked similar paths in career and leadership development, and want to partner with you to see our engineering community thrive and your company grow.
We have created a proprietary process and frameworks from our own engineer’s first-hand experience with leadership development efforts, lessons learned in Engineering related industries, and proven tools and resources.
Our Mission:
Our mission is to bridge the gap between senior leadership and emerging leaders in engineering organizations so that the company can achieve exponential success while creating a fulfilling and thriving work environment.
